Beware of fake Super Bowl Coinbase QR codes

One of this year’s Super Bowl commercials included a bouncing QR code all over millions of TV screens. The link directed curious viewers to a Coinbase signing up page with a $15 dollar incentive (now down to $5) and a $3 million sweepstake prize. While the ad was a real success (see it here)in terms of engagement – the website got hit over 20 million times in the first minute – there is now a real risk of scammers trying to replicate the QR code on social media. And that QR code would direct you to a fake look-alike malicious website.

So as we recently posted, always be cautious when scanning QR codes and make sure they take you to legit websites. Coinbase’s QR code as it appeared on the ad last Sunday was as follows:
